Atheist Mums Unite!

This Atheist Mum is quite annoyed. And I don't blame her.

Is this the only school available to this mother for her daughter?? Why is she in a religous school when she is clearly atheist? That makes no sense to me.

It's not technically a religious school. I have the same problem with my son at his school. They're supposed to be ordinary state schools. I think my son's school is possibly worse, as the head of his year and the year below is a crazy god-believer. Punishment for saying "Oh my God" and all that.

So, it seems we have no choice. Alsthough, I do have the option to withdraw my son from RE and assembly - but he doesn't want the embarrasment.

I just don't like it when the resurrection gets taught as historical fact. Bit naughty.

That's amusing Simon. Our public or "state" schools, as you call them, aren't PERMITTED to teach ANYTHING religious. The children are not permitted to pray before classes start. YOur schools are the opposite! That's odd.
If I were that mother, I'd see about other options.

Yeah we do things a bit muddled in the UK. A little bit modern, a little bit stuck in the past. There's less religion than when I went to school. Of course, you can't remove it completely or there'd be an outcry.

So what do they pray for? lol. That may NOT be a good sign, you know....

I remember in primary school we had to sing hymns during assembly. Some grey haired old biddy would play the piano and if we were lucky we would be allowed to chose which hymn. We always chose "Onward Christian Soldiers" 'cos it had fighting in it. So we'd sing our hearts out and the teachers would smile smugly, as if to say "We got them".

To us Christianity was soldiers going to kick the shit out of each other. But they didn't care. All that matters is the programming, not the message.

Hi, Simon and thanks for putting me on your blog. I obviously need to blog about the school system in the UK with a more global audience in mind, but for the moment... dabich, the school my kids go to is a non-denominational school, and pretty much the best in the area. My only complaint is with the recent increase in religion, and I'm beginning to realise that the problem is with the whole education policy here. Unfortunately there are no state schools in the UK that are religion free, and the way things are going we're going to end up with much more religion in all schools. So much for the secular state. You guys have the separation of church and state enshrined in your constitution. We don't even have a sodding constitution!

Hi Atheist Mom!
It's funny, but I'm definitely Christian. HOWEVER, I will defend anyone's right of CHOICE. It's odd indeed that your schools allow and integrate so much religion in their systems. In fact, it stuns me.
My daughter and some of her friends, when in high school, started their own "prayer circle" before home room so they could pray and start their day the way they wanted. No one interfered. Again, it was CHOICE these kids exercised. Good luck with resolving your problem!!

Are you sure it wasn't choice they exorcised?

It's a hangover from history, dabich. Our nation is 1000 years old. We still have an unelected house of our parliament - the House Of Lords. These people inherited their position. Dunno about bringing democracy to Iraq, how about bringing some to our own country?

Hi Atheist Mum! Glad you could pop over.

Exercise: An act of employing or putting into play; use: the free exercise of intellect; the exercise of an option

Exorcise: To expel (an evil spirit) by or as if by incantation, command, or prayer

Stick with music, Simon LOL!

I'm not up on British rule, but you know, that just sucks! Inheriting positions in the house of commons? Just wrong!
