Science and the Ignorant

This is from Talk.Origins

"Scientific theories are validated by empirical testing against physical observations. Theories are not judged simply by their logical compatibility with the available data."

Imagine all possible knowledge is like a pile of jigsaw pieces, stretching out into what appears to be infinity.

Scientists take the long and labourious road - they slowly and meticulously sort through the pieces and try to see how they fit together. Every now and then, some pieces come together and a new part of the whole picture is revealed.

Religious thinkers, including creationists and Intelligent Designers, can't be bothered with that - they want the answer to everything and they want it now (the spoilt children that they are). They've already decided what they want the picture to look like. So, they take the available pieces and they try desperately to fit them together in a way which will form this picture. As we all know, spoilt children are stubborn and, even if the pieces clearly don't fit, they will force them together and hope we don't notice how clumsy it looks. They declare the puzzle finished and expect our praise - the little brats.

Scientific discovery often involves placing some of the pieces together to form a skeleton of the picture. The scientist is then able to predict what the missing pieces will look like when they are eventually found. Darwin predicted the existence of species which weren't discovered until many years later. The guy who invented the periodic table predicted the existence of elements which were then later discovered.

Religious believers have never predicted anything that has later been discovered. How could they? Their version of the jigsaw has all the pieces forced into all the wrong places, as they try to make a picture of a nice, big house, with a big friendly fairy in it, who will make all the nasty things go away.

Deny evolution if you wish. But do so out of knowledge, not ignorance.

I'm afraid there's no easy route. You have to study books and everything. Like, for years at a time. Sometimes, scientists spend their entire lives in dedicated study and make up only one tiny bit of the jigsaw. Sometimes, a genius comes along and fits a whole load together. Sometimes, it turns out, the bit they thought they made was wrong (even so, it usually helps later scientists to put the right bits together).

But the religious brats don't want that. "I can't wait! I won't wait! I want it all and I want it now!"

"I don't want to study! I don't want to listen to you! I want a god and I want an afterlife, so give it me or I'll scweam and scweam! You don't believe me? WAAAAAAARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!"

The world was created 6000 years ago. The dinosaur bones were placed there by the devil in order to fool scientists. The morning dew is placed on the grass stalks by tiny little naked angels with teensy pipettes, defying the laws of physics by their flitting from blade to blade, and their very existance. I'm off to talk to my imaginary friend...

where in the bible does it say JESUS slept with whores???????? you are clearly deceaved. but it does not matter what you believe.... because EVERY KNEE WILL BOW EVERY TONGUE WILL, CONFESS THAT JESUS IS LORD.

IF HE is going to try to force me, I think I may be a bit obtuse. A bit like Rosie Kane when she swore allegiance to the Crown in the Scottish Parliament - she held her hand up and written on it was "my oath is to the people". I might hold my hand up and on it may be, "i'm still an athiest."

Nice one neil.

anon, what are you doing posting on a sunday. you should be resting or something. sounds like you need a bit of a break - slow down, mate, you're heading for a breakdown.

Mary Magdelin was a whore and Jesus slept with her. I know because I read it in a book. Well, I didn't actually read the book, but I know someone who knows someone who heard that someone had written a book about it.

I feel so special. Simon is posting in my honor. Please don't tell me I'm wrong or I'll be really, really upset on a Monday morning :/

I DO love your stories tho :)

Couldn't they just look at the box it came in to see what the jigsaw should look like?

yeah, the idiots

The Davinci code is hardly a scholarly source to say that Jesus slept with a whore- Mary Magdalene or any other whore for that matter.(I'm assuming that is what book your referring to)

I don't see how dinosaurs necessarily validate evolution because there still isn't any sort of missing link or transitional form. There is such a huge gap in the fossil record you'd think they would have found something by now

As far as this anonymous person, decieved is spelled D-e-c-i-e-v-e-d, unless that's how they spell it in the UK or something in which case I have no authority there.

If you need it in a sentence you can probably find one in the glossary at the back of your Bible...it's used a lot in the Bible I'm surprised you wouldn't know how to spell it...maybe if you read it more you would know how to spell it, tsk tsk.

I thought it was "i before e except after c".

Are you an expert on evolution, mercurial?

Sagan argues that (1) scientific literacy and critical thought are vital for the success of any democratic society; (2) the scientific method is presently the best method that we have to determine some sort of provisional truth that we can work with; (3) science is successful due to the error-correcting machinery present in its method; and (4) democracy is a good social system of governance as it also contains error-correcting attributes.

the big difference between the religious and the scientific, adopting the puzzle analogy, is this: a scientist has no idea what the end picture will be, and is only interested in fitting each puzzle piece into its correct place in order to eventually expose end picture; the religious have already decided what the picture will be, and are happy to ram puzzle pieces into whatever place best fits their picture, regardless of the actual picture, and even if they have to cut off the little sticky-out bits to do it. My little sister used to do exactly the same thing when she was about 18 months old, except i believe she drooled less.

and, did i really see that? A religious person telling someone that a BOOK isn't enough evidence on which to base statements about Jesus' life??? Oh, the irony!

Well said, moonflake. I like people who agree with me. Particularly when I don't have to pay them to do it.

actually, Mary magdalene was not a whote at all, that's something the catholic church decided to sell to their followers. she was actually a spiritual woman whose family claimed to be psychic, gifts which would be considered heretical in christian dogma.

Simon said...

but that doesn't wind up Christians so much

scribe said...

It does when you add that she probably took jesus' progeny to Europe and started the royal bloodline LOL

DaBich said...

Simon, you're correct on the i before e except after c...therefore deceived is the correct spelling.

How many people do you pay to agree with you? That's sily, when you adore disagreement so immensely ;)

I am actually a member of the Jesus bloodline. This blog is all part of preparing you for the new Word.

There has to be a victor, dabich, and nobody ever won a fair fight.

DaBich said...

And if you win the fight, what do you excpect? Me to bow down to Darwin? I think not, fair Simon. Fight as dirty as you like, just don't expect me to do the same.

Simon said...

You fool, I shall rule world!!! Mwah hahahahhaha!

DaBich said...

Go for it ;) Just make sure you leave me some chocolate!

EVERY KNEE WILL BOW

Is this anatomically possible?

DaBich said...

How about "Every knee will bend"
is that better?

Kneel said...

What about, "Every knee will, Bond." From the upcoming Bond movie, "Kneecracker".

Thank you for your comments on my blog.

This is a good article. One of the main reasons why I reject creationism or ID is that advocates of these ‘theories’ start off by believing that there is a creator, and then they try and force the evidence to fit this view. Science works the other way round: collect data, test hypotheses, and base one’s conclusions on the results. This is why I rather go with science.

All the best
Kevin
